What The Actors' Gang is

The Actors' Gang in Culver City is a theatre company whose mission includes presenting new, unconventional plays and reinterpretations of classic works. Its work also extends beyond performances: the company offers theater education and programs for incarcerated people.

The company began in 1981 with eight UCLA students performing in garages, art galleries, street corners, and small venues. One early milestone was the 1982 premiere of Ubu The King at the CASH Gallery in Hollywood, followed by a six-month run at the Pilot Theater.

The company began producing theater year-round in 1994, when it took up residence at The Actors’ Gang Theater in Hollywood.

In 2005, the company moved to Ivy Substation in Culver City and began an education program in partnership with Culver City Unified School District.

Its history also includes a free Shakespeare in the Park performance at Media Park in 2006, which began a summer tradition. The company’s production archive is organized by decade, with past seasons listed for the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.

The Actors’ Gang Theater is at 9070 Venice Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232, at the corner of Venice Boulevard and Culver Boulevard. The venue occupies Ivy Substation, a Mission Revival-style building built in 1907 as a traction substation for the Los Angeles Pacific Railway and renovated for theater use in the 1990s.

Inside, the 99-seat theater has stadium seating, a lobby, box office, concessions bar, and patio. The company places the venue on the southwest corner of Venice Boulevard at the easternmost point of Downtown Culver City, where restaurants, bars, and cafés are within walking distance.

Finding performances and tickets

The Actors’ Gang lists productions, schedules, and ticket information by season, so check the official site before you go for current performance dates and availability. Its production archive can help you trace past work, while the current listing is the place to confirm what is playing and how to book.

The company also lists a rotating Friday performance series at 9 p.m. These shows are pay-what-you-can at the door, or you can reserve in advance for $15. The schedule is subject to change, so confirm the details before planning an evening around a particular performance.

For tickets and event enquiries, contact BoxOffice@TheActorsGang.com or call 310-838-4264, extension 1. Online ticket purchases are linked from the company’s tickets page. The lobby opens 40 minutes before showtime, and you can purchase or pick up tickets at the box office once it opens.

For a practical arrival plan, first confirm the performance time and ticket arrangements, then allow for the walk or drive to the venue. If you need assistance beyond the listed accessibility features, contact the box office ahead of your visit.

Getting to the venue

The Actors’ Gang is about a five-minute drive from Galaxy Inn. The theater is also about a 10-minute walk from the Culver City stop on Metro’s E Line, which runs between East Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Bus lines 33 and 733 stop at Venice Boulevard and Culver Boulevard beside the theater.

If you take the E Line, plan for the walk from the stop; by bus, the listed stop is beside the venue. The theater’s address puts it at the Venice Boulevard and Culver Boulevard corner, which is also the location to use when checking your route.

Parking and arrival planning

Street parking is available on Venice Boulevard next to the theater. It is unrestricted after 6 p.m. and on Sundays; for other street parking in the neighborhood, check posted signs for restrictions.

Another option is the public parking structure by Trader Joe’s on Culver Boulevard, across from the theater. The first hour is free, with a fee for each additional hour.

If you expect to stay longer than an hour, factor that into your parking plan. The lobby’s opening time also gives you a window to collect or buy tickets before the performance begins.

Accessibility and visitor policies

The theater has an elevator and ADA-compliant restrooms. ADA-accessible seating is available to purchase online. If you have other accommodation needs, contact the box office to discuss them before your visit.
